Consumer Unit Upgrade Electrician in Washington

An old fuse box, no RCD protection, or a board that’s showing its age? A modern consumer unit protects every circuit separately and is usually a one-day job.

Your consumer unit decides how quickly the power cuts out when something goes wrong. Older boards with fuse wire or a single RCD can leave you exposed, or plunge half the house into darkness when one appliance fails.

A new RCBO board protects each circuit on its own, and surge protection guards your electronics. Before swapping, every circuit in your Washington home is tested, so any hidden faults come to light before the new board goes in, not after.

Time to upgrade if

  • You still have fuse wire or cartridge fuses
  • There’s no RCD, or one for everything
  • The board is plastic and under the stairs
  • It buzzes, smells warm or has scorch marks
  • One fault knocks out half the house
  • You’re adding a charger, solar or an extension

How a board change works

  1. Test first

Earthing, bonding and every circuit checked.

  2. Fit and label

New metal-cased board in, every way clearly labelled.

  3. Certify

Tested, certified and notified under Part P.

Fuse boards in Washington’s new-town homes

Many Washington houses were built in the 1970s and 80s and still have their original or early replacement boards. Adding solar, a home battery or an EV charger often means a new board with spare ways and surge protection.
